r
- Reactive Chemicals Substances that can undergo violent reactions when exposed to air, water, or other chemicals, posing fire or explosion hazards.
- Resistance The opposition to electrical current flow, which can cause heat buildup if excessive.
s
- Sealed Battery A type of battery that does not require regular electrolyte maintenance and prevents leakage.
- Seismic Protection Structural features designed to protect battery racks from earthquakes or other vibrations.
- Series Connection A battery configuration that increases voltage while maintaining the same current capacity.
- Short Circuit An unintended direct connection between the positive and negative terminals, causing excessive current flow.
- Specific Gravity A measurement of the density of the battery’s electrolyte compared to water, used to determine charge state.
- Spill Containment A system designed to prevent electrolyte leaks from spreading.
- Static Electricity Discharge The buildup and sudden release of electrical charge, which can ignite flammable vapors or damage sensitive electronics.
- Step Potential The voltage difference between two points on the ground surface separated by a step distance (approximately 1 meter). High step potential can cause electric shock during fault conditions
- Sulfation The buildup of lead sulfate crystals on battery plates, reducing capacity and efficiency.
t
- Thermal Runaway A dangerous condition where a battery overheats uncontrollably due to excessive charging or internal failure.
- Thermal Runaway A dangerous condition in which a battery overheats uncontrollably, potentially leading to fire or explosion.
- Touch Potential The voltage difference between a person touching a grounded object and the surrounding earth. It determines the risk of electrical shock.
v
- Volta Alessandro Volta (1745–1827) was an Italian physicist, chemist, and pioneer in electricity and power. He is most famous for inventing the electric battery and discovering methane gas.
